Battlefront 2: Is this the game you’re looking for?
I have sunk an unholy amount of time into this generation’s Battlefront 1. I loved that game even when others slagged it off, I stood my ground. The original game had its problems. It was light on content and for some it felt too simple. But for me it was the perfect pick up and play shooter after work for a hour or so.
I am so hyped for this new game, EA are seemingly addressing all the issues from the first game. My Star Wars Battlefront 2 Preview session had an hour and half wait consistently throughout the day at EGX. This is a good sign, people seem on board and willing to give this franchise another shot. The hype, it seems, is real.
A New Hope?
The cross section I played was based on Naboo. One of the prequel maps they are showing off all over the shop. My first impressions were good. I placed the controller in my hands and it felt very familiar. Yet there were noticeable changes that seem to be aimed squarely at its critics. When you first spawn in, you now choose your class – much like battlefield. Similarly you now spawn as a unit – much like battlefield, seems like there’s a theme here – and you have to pick classes to compliment these large objective modes.
I have to admit, I did not really know what the hell I was doing and what the objective was. From what I gathered, we had to stop the Republic taking control of the senate HQ. This involved stopping a payload reaching the building and then stopping them taking control of the throne room. It was fun but I did not have enough time to really understand the full picture, this will be really nice to explore and get to know when the beta arrives.
The force is strong with this one
The game looked amazing! I cant stress that enough. The sounds were all there and it felt very Star Wars once again. In Battlefront 1 they added a roll move half way in it’s life cycle, this remains as well as a roll forward! I did feel bad ass rolling out of cover and shooting a droid. The biggest change was with the introduction of a point system for unlocks. Now with every kill you get a value associated and this then goes into your pot ready to bring the pain with air support, mech’s, and of course, heros! During the session Darth Maul popped in and had a scrap with Rey, the game feels like someone’s toy box all going at it in a made up situation and that is great!
Bottom line, I did like my experience a lot but like all cross sections of a game it did not give itself enough to show off and in all honesty probably did not sell itself enough. But man oh man, I am hyped to play more, hopefully they will have enough content to get going day 1. EA have been very tight lipped about what game modes, maps and content will drop in the first phase. They will really hang themselves out to dry if they don’t drop with a rich content package, they don’t want to get burnt twice!
