The idea of combining physical figures and video games has become something of a trend over the last few years off the back of the colossal success of Activision’s Skylanders franchise. We’ve had alongside Skylanders, the likes of Disney Infinity and Nintendo’s more recent Amiibo collectable figurines. But in what could really only be seen as the best toys to video games crossover imaginable LEGO are now bringing their ever excellent construction toys into the mix.
A fantastic and fun announcement trailer for the game no doubt, and something we’re big fans of. Alongside announcing the game, LEGO have also revealed what we can expect upon launch with a Starter Pack of the game plus varying add on packs called Fun Packs, Level Packs and Team Packs. The Starter Pack is set to include a copy of the game, 3 Minifigures consisting of Batman, Gandalf and Wyldstyle, a Batmobile and the game portal, which in a neat clever LEGO trick consists of an NFC reading pad and an actual 200+ piece brick build that makes up the portal seen in the game. Take a look below for an image of the game’s Starter Pack and all the included elements.
To us we feel the game has plenty of opportunity to be something sensational, but will not only rely on how faithfully it brings together the LEGO game’s charm with varying LEGO universe characters but also a need for unique and continually expanding gameplay. With TT games once more taking the development reigns we have high hopes for an exciting and awesome game. Something we’d especially like to see, that could really set the game apart though is a huge free form LEGO based game creator allowing you to mix and match the worlds and characters in new exciting ways to create your own games, similar to that of the ‘Toy Box’ in Disney Infinity.
As you can tell, we’re rather excited for the game and can’t wait to give this a play when it launches later this year. What are your thoughts on the idea of the game? Are you worried about the levels of content that could require physical purchases or does the urge to collect already strike and have you as excited as we are? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
LEGO Dimensions is set to launch on September 29th 2015 and will be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. The Starter Pack will retail at £99.99/£89.99 for current and last gen consoles respectively. Level and Team Packs will cost £29.99 each, with Fun Packs filling the lower end of the spectrum at £14.99 each.
