It’s been an interesting journey over the last few years with Ghosbusters fans having constantly had to deal with rumours of a 3rd installment being shot down by members of the original cast. Then, to the surprise of everyone a complete reboot of the series was announced, staring an all new team, an all new team comprised of a handful of the best female comedic talent out there and directed by none other than Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.
The internet has been rabid with talk about what this would mean for the highly beloved franchise, how would the dynamics of the team change and in turn would this still feel like Ghostbusters? Well, with several teases including images of the new team looking suitably kitted out and of course the reveal of an updated ECTO-1 we’re finally getting our first trailer to answer some of those many questions we’ve all had. Check it out below.
It’s an interesting trailer for sure, showing many of the key beats of the original movie with some new additions too. Whilst we remain positively optimistic about the movie – given the incredible talent behind it – we do feel the trailer is a little bit of a mixed bag. Some of the jokes feel a little flat and there does appear to be some degree of shoehorning un-required stereotypes on to these characters which feels a little archaic given that the film is flipping action-comedy genre gender stereotyping on it’s head with it’s all female team. Hopefully this is just a poor choice of trailer editing and these jokes will be downplayed in the true movie.
Also, big mistake right at the beginning ’30 years ago, four scientists saved New York’. Umm, no, pretty sure it was 3 scientists and an everyman. Ouch.
What did you think to the trailer? At the time of writing, this trailer has 142,055 downvotes compared to 84,566 upvotes on youtube which is a pretty damning ratio. Only time will tell as to how Sony will react to that.
