A rumour fresh from variety is that Sony are looking at the potential of rebooting the Ghostbusters franchise with an entirely female lead cast of spectre seizers. According to the report Sony are chasing for Paul Feig director of the hugely popular and successful comedy Bridesmaids to helm the movie, which will be a complete reboot of the series with a script written from scratch.
Whilst it is said that no formal negotiations have begun with Feig, it’s likely that given Sony’s intention is to get him on board given his consistent success with female lead comedies. Could it be likely that should he take up the position we could see the likes of comedies best and brightest leading ladies such as Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Anna Kendrick making up the new team of Busters?
It’s certainly got some potential, and it’d be great to see such a huge franchise as Ghostbusters embrace a female lead cast. It’s key to note that it’s not clear however if this film would replace the continually gestating ‘Ghostbusters 3’ or if it would be completely separate. Though given the recent drop out of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, the continual on again off again commitment from Bill Murray and the recent sad departure of Harold Ramis, it does seem very unlikely that a 3rd Ghostbusters with the original cast will surface.
Would you like to see a new Ghostbusters reboot? Could the female lead cast be a refreshing change and a great way to revitalise the franchise? It looks like we may find out in the not too distant future, expect more as soon as we hear it.
