For Better Or Worse Super Mario Odyssey Is Exactly What You’d Expect

Our Super Mario Odyssey Preview consisted of a slim 10 minute session, playing on a dessert themed world. Gameplay felt just like every 3D Mario game I can remember, simple, responsive and fun. Of course that’s fantastic news, yet I came away feeling slightly less excited about Super Mario Odyssey than before my play session.

Why I thought? Well I think, simply put, I just didn’t feel engaged or excited by anything new. It plays with the same style every other 3D Mario game has. While the new cap mechanics – you can throw your cap to break blocks, and inhabit objects – helps to provide some variety. It just didn’t engage me how I expected.

Nevertheless, as negative as that sounds, this is, as with all Mario titles, an absolute must have. The worlds and environments were rich with detail, filled with those classic Mario surprises. Hidden collectibles here, secret routes there, and of course plenty of Goombas to jump on. Gameplay is excellent and feels just as good on the Nintendo Switch as it has on every other console.

With Mario’s journey through Super Mario Odyssey taking the character to new and unusual environments. The likes of New Donk city – A New York city clone replete with full size humans – alongside plenty of other worlds. I hope that the game will both surprise and excite me on launch, as inevitably this is a must have for any Nintendo Switch owner.
