After months of speculation and increasingly frequent hardware leaks from suppliers surfacing on the likes of eBay Sony has at last officially announced the clearly coming PlayStation 4 Slim.
The new unit is said to be thinner and more energy efficient than the current chassis model of the launch PS4. The design hasn’t altered significantly and much like previous slim variants of Sony’s PS3 and PS2 the console retains the core design styling of it’s forebearer whilst smoothing things out with subtle tweaks creating a refined look and feel. Interestingly the Dualshock 4 has had a slight design tweak, with the LED bar now also visible through a small gap at the top of the front touch pad. A nice little touch, especially with many games using this feature and not many of us seeing it with the light being on the opposite side of the controller at present.
Set to launch on September 15th the console will be available from £259. As of yet the design has only been announced in black, whether we’ll see any colour variants such as the white version of the larger PS4 is yet to be revealed.
Overall the PS4 slim forms part of the common business practices we’ve come to see in the console industry over the last several generations and represents a great new stepping on point for gamers yet to upgrade. Whilst it brings very little new to the table, we think it looks like a great update to the current hardware and should help broaden the install base with it’s new look and pricing model.
The big question of course is how gamers will decide between this new slim model and the recently announced Playstation 4 NEO which not only brings an updated design to the table but a full reinvention of the internal specifications promising much greater visual fidelity and 4k visuals for gaming as well as video.
