4. Jake Gyllenhal
Known For: Donnie Darko, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Gyllenhal would be up there for us as one of the better options for the role, his acting prowess is excellent and it’s about time he stepped into the shoes of a superhero. Dr Strange seems like the perfect fit given Jake’s past roles and as someone who almost replaced Tobey Maguire in Spiderman 2 we think it’s about time he had his own superhero role.
5. Ethan Hawke
Known For: Gattaca, Training Day
When the initial casting rumours were circling for the role of Dr Strange, Ethan Hawke was rumoured as a front runner alongside Joaquin Phoenix. Whereas Marvel pursued Phoenix for the role, Hawke was said to be very keen and open to discussions with Marvel, something that could, no doubt, play well for the actor if he remains interested.
6. Matthew McConaughey
Known For: Dallas Buyers Club, True Detective
McConaughey is an acting machine, having seriously raised the bar with some sensational roles in movies and TV over the last few years including the likes of True Detective, Mud and Dallas Buyers Club. Whilst we certainly feel McConaughey could excel as Dr Strange we’re not entirely convinced he would be the perfect fit, though we’re more than happy to be surprised.
