Jared Leto may be DC’s new Joker in 2016’s Suicide Squad

The casting rumours for DC’s upcoming slate of movies continue to come thick and fast, and now we can add yet another high profile actor to the already hefty rumoured cast of Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Tom Hardy for DC’s Suicide Squad. According to sources in contact with THR, Jared Leto the Oscar and Golden Globe winner for his supporting role in Dallas Buyers Club and world known singer and guitarist for his band 30 Seconds to Mars may well be coming to DC’s new cinematic universe as none other than The Joker.

The fan favourite character, most recently and famously played by the late and very excellent Heath Ledger could be returning in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Given that the last time cinema audiences were treated to The Joker was in 2008’s Dark Knight, is it potentially too soon for a new actor to take over the iconic role? Leto is very particular about the roles he accepts for movies often taking more of his time to work on his musical projects, could this role be bringing him back to movies, if it is indeed true?

The David Ayer directed Suicide Squad was revealed to be making it’s way to cinemas in August 2016 several months after DC’s first entry into it’s cinematic universe, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Revealed as part of DC’s full slate of movies coming between 2016-2020, could Suicide Squad be a spring board for introducing some new characters and bringing prominence to DC’s veritable Villians. Giving the characters a chance to shine on their own before perhaps being incorporated as primary antagonists in other movies, or as rumoured could it in fact be a standalone story?

What are your thoughts on the idea of Jared Leto taking up the role of The Joker? Is it far too soon since Heath Ledger, or is it a great idea to help rejuvenate the character early on in the DC’s new cinematic universe. Let us know your thoughts?!
