Game Of Thrones, how many seasons are left?

Thanks to the keen folks over at IGN it has been revealed how many more seasons of Game Of Thrones we should be expecting to see before the series and indeed the story of the books is fully wrapped up. In a recent interview with Variety Magazine show runners on the Game Of Thrones series David Benioff and D.B Weiss have spoken candidly about the development of the show as the books continue to be written and how they will not drag out the show for the sake of it. In the interview the pair talk about the oft noted concern of fans that the series may catch up with the books and in turn could lose it’s way. George R.R. Martin writer of the novels has discussed how confident he is that despite the show rapidly catching up with the books, he feels the final volumes will be completed before the show has need of them.

Beyond this it’s been expanded that Martin already has an outline prepared and awareness of how the story will continue and indeed conclude. Benioff mentions how the team have visited Martin to discuss what’s coming for the story so they they could “Talk through where things are going, because we don’t know if we are going to catch up and where exactly that would be”. He continued “If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends. We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.”

From their discussions with Martin and the plots of the books, Benioff and Weiss feel that the show will most likely come to it’s conclusion somewhere around it’s 7th or 8th season. Whilst this means we’ll still be seeing Game Of Thrones on our TV screens till either 2017/2018 it does also mean that the upcoming Season 4 could mark the halfway point. With excitement running high and the show continuing to pull it’s characters and it’s audience in unexpected ways, it’s good to know that there will not be any elaboration to expand the series just to get more episodes and that a concise vision of Martin’s story will be shown and followed throughout the series.
