An Indie Puzzle Game Well Worth Your Time

Uk developer Toxic Games have managed to make the concept of manipulating cubes and colours, into a fully fledged beautiful puzzle game. The studio was founded in 2010 and had relative success with with the original QUBE but did not have a story attached to it. QUBE 2 has a driving narrative that adds depth to the game that was not present before. We got hands on with the game in our QUBE 2 preview to see what it’s all about.

Puzzle Pieces

The game mechanics get introduced very quickly. The idea is to manipulate blocks by adding properties to them (sounds dull, it’s not). For example, you change a cube’s colour, which could make it extrude so you can jump on it, or change a cube to make it bouncy. These puzzles ramp up in a very natural manner, during my 20 minutes with the game I felt real validation when I solved a puzzle and never got fully stuck but did have a few ‘oh yea if I do this, then this would do that, and I can then get up there’ moments. The game’s aesthetic, looks and feels a lot like Portal 2. The developer’s know this, and thus the aesthetic is something of a homage to it’s minimal design.

QUBE 2 is coming in the beginning of 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Toxic games are a small dedicated UK team. Their passion shines through and we are definitely excited to see more.
