In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Ben Affleck has discussed the challenges of taking on the role of The Dark Knight in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. He notes how Warner Bros. warned him about the likely fan outcry to his casting as Bruce Wayne/Batman, that though, didn’t affect him, claiming “I wouldn’t have taken part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking”.
Continuing Affleck mentioned “I think Chris Terrio wrote a terrific script. Zack’s a great visual director. And there’s an interesting take. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think I could do it. I have a benefit of a lot of that understanding. But also, everyone is entitled to their opinion. That’s a big part of this international sport.”
When talking about how it was to play the role of such an iconic superhero as Batman, Affleck said that “I’m right in the middle of shooting now”, “It’s a process that I’ll probably have better perspective on when I’m done”. “I can tell you that every time I do a role, it’s the responsibility of an actor to get their physical self as close to the role as possible. Batman’s obviously got a set of expectations that are tough. So I spent a lot of time working out.”
It’s interesting to wonder what we can take away from Affleck’s take on Batman with these comments. It sounds as though he has distanced himself from the furore surrounding the role and is focused on matching the expectations of the character as opposed to the fans. We’re not sure whether this should fill us with confidence on Affleck’s attempts to emulate the Batman of the comics or if he’s trying to keep his distance by not truly being the character.
